Caricature and character

I had not long completed an exercise of a similar style in the Graphic Fiction course, and so found this to be a least favourite exercise. That said, my caricature in Graphic Fiction was more on the cartoon side based on Jack Black. To make this feel less repetitive I decided to take a different direction, and focus on the traditional sense of a caricature.

I chose to make the subject Freddy Mercury. After searching for some images I could use as reference, I began sketching the more "outrageous" caricature. I felt that Freddy would have been some what easy to work with giving that his features are quite distinct.

I treated this as a bit of a warm up, some of the sketches weren't strong but one did stand out for me - bottom right.

This sketch felt to be fun, I liked that it was more of a pout rather than a teeth shot so I continued with this.

It was fun to do but not something I like.

After this I then went back a step in the exercise and created a portrait based on the same photo, which is more in my comfort zone!

Here is a video time lapse of the process for both the caricature and the portrait study.
